Ioannis Fountoulis (1927-2007) was born a few years after the expulsion from Ayvalık in the resettlement of his parents in Mesagros, Lesvos. His family’s former home was opposite the Agiasma of Panagia Phaneromeni. He studied at the Theological School of Athens and then specialized in Liturgy at various universities, institutes and centres in Europe such as Mont-César in Leuven (Belgium) and Saint Sergius (Paris), the Bollandist society (Brussels) and research centres in Venice, Florence, the Vatican, Grottaferrata (Rome) and others. He was one of the few Greeks who openly promoted dialog between the Orthodox and Catholic Churches.
Between 1969 and 1996, he was a professor at the Faculty of Theology of the University of Thessaloniki, where he specialized in Liturgy and Homiletics (Ecclesiastical Rhetoric). He was also director of the Patriarchal Foundation for Patristic Studies in Thessaloniki, where he edited the journal “Klironomia” (Legacy). He participated in several theological conferences and published many books on the subject.
Ioannis Fountoulis also focused his interest on highlighting the ecclesiastical history and topography of Lesvos and Ayvalık.
